CSUSB is pleased to announce the Ethnic Studies Roundtable
Date: May 23, 2006 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Location: the Santos Manuel Student Union Event's Center
The roundtable, which begins at 10 a.m., will focus on issues that include; the role of art and language in ethnic, cultural, and racial identity; Mexican American art; Holocaust survivors in the United States; and the representation of Arabs and Arab-Americans in film.
Opening Remarks: President Karnig
The first panel session, “The Role of Art, Language, and Geography in Ethnic, Cultural, and Racial Identity,” will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will feature:

Nathan Carter, Assistant Professor of Communication: “The Black Body as Visual Predicament: Rhetorical Representations of Race & Racism in the Media”

Nena Torrez, Professor of Education: “Glimpses of Mexican Immigrant Life through Art”

Mary Fong, Professor of Communication Studies: “A Chinese American Way of Speaking: the Persuasive Function.”

Michal Kohout, Assistant Professor of Geography on “Welcome to Tijuana: Geography on the Border”

The program will break for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. From 1 to 2 p.m. refreshments will be served during which the Ethnic Studies Program and the program's board members will be introduced to attendees.

The second panel session, “Transnationalism and the Politics of Representation” will from be from 2 to 4 p.m. and will feature:

Timothy Pytell, Assistant Professor of History: “Narrating Tragedy: Holocaust Survivors in America”
• Anne Bennett, Assistant Professor of Anthropology: “The Representation of Arabs and Arab-Americans in Cinema”
• Jim Fenelon, Professor of Sociology: “The Indian: Race, Ethnicity, National Origin and Representation”
Closing remarks will be made by Mary Fong, the coordinator of the Ethnic Studies program.
